In March 2026, Apanage Gallery presented Royaume at Suburbs Gallery — a digital art space located in the suburbs of Montreal, Canada. Twelve artists, each working independently within their own practice, brought their work into a shared physical space for the first group exhibition of the Apanage x Suburbs Gallery partnership.
The title is French for kingdom. It was chosen not as aesthetic decoration, but as a statement of intent: these are artists who have built something of their own. The word royaume implies territory, sovereignty, self-determination. Applied to a group of working artists in 2026, it points to something the contemporary art world rarely names directly — the discipline required to build a practice that belongs entirely to you.
The Exhibition
Suburbs Gallery occupies a distinct position in Montreal's art landscape: a dedicated digital art space designed around screen-based presentation. Works are displayed on floor-to-ceiling screens positioned throughout a darkened room, their reflections doubling across the polished floor beneath. The result is an environment where digital work isn't framed as secondary to physical media — it occupies the space with the same weight and presence as any painted canvas.
Royaume brought twelve artists into this environment. The works shown were diverse in approach — figurative, graphic, painterly, atmospheric — yet the exhibition read as a single body. Not because the works resembled each other, but because each carried the same weight. There was an emotional coherence to the room that is difficult to manufacture: it either exists or it doesn't. At Royaume, it existed. Viewers moved through the space as though pulled — from one work to the next, from one world into another — without the experience ever breaking.
All twelve participating artists are members of the Apanage Members Club — Apanage's exclusive professional structure for working with artists who have met its sovereignty.
Royaume marks the opening chapter of the Apanage x Suburbs Gallery exhibition partnership — a program built on the premise that artists working seriously deserve to be shown seriously. More exhibitions will follow.
